I'm always looking at things from a historian's perspective. Church history helps us avoid the danger of becoming to "faddish." (Something we don't want to do with the gospel.) If you want to read a "very brief history" of the Emerging Church, check out Mark Driscoll's short 2006 article in CTR now posted on-line. Mark is the Lead Pastor of Mars Hill Church (Seattle) who once helped lead the movement and now more closely aligns himself with Evangelicals like John Piper and D. A. Carson. He provides three (3) categories of postmodern/emergent leaders and he also shows why this conversation is important for churches. It impacts everything from worship style, preaching, missions and doctrine.
