My wife and I enjoyed a delightful lunch with Brad and Shannon Courtaney today. We were both blessed as we listened to their testimony of how God is guiding their family through Brad’s recent discovery that he has cancer. I don’t think Brad stopped smiling the entire time we talked – even though he is battling an awful disease, and won’t be able to fly for a while – he believes that God is sovereign, that God is good, and that his ultimate hope is in the Lord. A former Air Force pilot who flew refueling jets in the military, Brad is now a pilot for Southwest Airlines and the father of four children.
While we were meeting with them today, Brad handed me an article by John Piper entitled, “Don’t Waste Your Cancer.” I just love it, love it, love it. Brad doesn't want to "waste" this trial and both said that while they are praying for healing (as are we), they are also praying that God will use this experience for their good, the good of others and his glory. Sometimes I come away from my time with God’s people amazed by them – and by the grace of God that is working every day in the lives of people at Calvary Church.
To those in our church who are battling cancer, I want to encourage you to keep flying high for his Glory. You are all in our thoughts and prayers daily.
