Purposeful Adventure

Four planes, three boats, two motorcycles and one long trail into the rainforest: that’s what it took us just to get to our final destination. But it was critical that we get there. Because missionaries Michael and Katrina Geurink (pictured left) represented the only global ministry partners of Calvary Church that we had yet to visit.

Over the last five years we’ve made it a high priority to go and see our missionaries. Successful gospel partnerships cannot be established and maintained by simply sending a monthly check to a far-off family and saying to them, in essence, “we’ll see you on furlough.” Being a missional church means going. So Joe, Mike and I went to the rainforest of Northern Brazil to evaluate, encourage and strengthen the Geurink’s ministry to the Ticuna Indians in the Amazon region.

Thousands upon thousands of Ticuna Indians are scattered throughout the most remote areas of the Amazon jungle. Most of them have never heard the name Jesus. And as our good friend Abraham Thomas has decried so powerfully and repeatedly, we want to give them at least “one chance” to hear about the One who died to make salvation possible for all people.

Michael and Katrina Geurink have devoted their lives to telling the unreached about Jesus. And we want to encourage them in the process.
